Dear Katy,
I would feel ungrateful if I didn’t write you to tell you how your music inspired me and essentially saved my life. My name is Markelle and I’m from Bountiful Utah. Ever since I heard your first hit single “I kissed a girl” I was arguably your number one fan. I loved that you were just your quirky self something I felt I could relate to. I went to your concert when your “California Dream” tour came through Salt Lake City, in fact I dressed up like you and I still have the ticket!
When I was a junior in high school I met my first love. He was my young heart’s everything and we continued to date for five years after that fateful meeting. Unfortunately after the first year and a half of dating his true colors came out and for the duration of our relationship I suffered from his physical, verbal, and emotional abuse. My life was hell. I gave everything I had trying to make it work always telling myself it was my fault. As the years passed I attempted suicide twice wishing to end my miserable life, I felt like I couldn’t live with him but that my young heart couldn’t live without him. Finally one day while I was driving your song “Wide Awake” came on the radio. It honestly brought tears to my eyes. Your lyrics were so beautiful and described how I was feeling perfectly. That was the day I decided I was never going to let him or any other man hurt me again. It sounds silly but I even made a playlist of songs at work entitled “Wide Awake” that also included your songs “Pearl” and “Part of me”. I listened to them everyday and forced myself to cut off all contact with him and your words gave me the strength to do so. I have been free of that abuse for several months now and I couldn’t be happier. I still listen to that play list when things get tough because they give me a sense of empowerment and love for myself that he had taken from me.
Your music helped me through the darkest part of my life and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I think you are not only beautiful but that you are true to yourself. I think you are the perfect role model for girls and women alike everywhere. .
