Hi, Katy. My name is Violet. I'm 13 years old, and a middle school student. Next year I'll be in high school. I'm planning on pursuing my options to begin a musical career. I sing and I play a few instruments alright. But that's not what I'm emailing about. What I wanted to tell you is that there is a difference between a star and a celebrity. A celebrity seems almost godlike to everyone around them. They're seemingly untouchable, beautiful, perfect. But a star takes their fame, and looks at everyone around them and says, "I'm not a god, I'm a person. I'm not here to stand above you, looking down at your life, your troubles, and your hopes. I'm here to receive you with open arms, and to listen to your troubles and hopes and dreams. I'm a person." So my question is, Katy, what are you?
From,
Violet

Dear Katy,

My name is Mina, and I have a soon to be 10 year old daughter who recently endured a lot of anxiety and pain of bullying and slowly losing her confidence from the one who should know better - one of her soccer coach.

Girls self- esteem is so important these days with so much pressure to "be perfect, #1, or never to fail." And, though discipline is very important, so is the fine balance of making sure to give at least 1 good feedback.

This was not the case for my daughter. She was losing her confidence, her focus, was becoming more emotional, more agitated, and we didn't know why until just a few days ago when I finally witnessed myself the verbal and mental abuse and embarrassment she was experiencing during a private lesson when he made her do push-ups for not having gotten a kick right.

For the past week, all we've been doing is talk about soccer and this specific coach. It's been frustrating and several times I've asked her to quit the sport...until today when she asked if we coul download your song so that we could listen to your song "ROAR."

All I have to say is THANK you so so much for writing the most amazing song that just rocks, pumps her up, and made her say today " Mommy, this is my theme song I'm going to sing before very game because I am going to roar so loud to remind him that I am tough no matter what!"

Thank you for motivating her and being that role model for my daughter and for so many other young gils who felt scared until they heard your song. I wish more younger singers could take your lead and just sing rather than swinging naked on some metal ball!

I would love for my daughter to one day meet you - so chime up next time you are. InAtlanta as she loves to sing every one one of your songs!

Cheers,

Mina
